Dedicated PS3 IP and Port Forwarding

Post by GoD_GraveDancer on Fri Sep 04, 2009 2:20 pm

First, a little background on routers and IP addresses.

Lets use my router for an example.

My router has 254 IP addresses that can be assigned. The range of these addresses is 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.254

Whenever something connects to my router, it automatically assigns an IP address to it. It uses 100-150. So, if I turn on my laptop, it is assigned IP address 192.168.1.100 If I then turn on my PS3, it is assigned 192.168.1.101 If I turn on my other PS3, it is assigned 192.168.1.102 The router assigns addresses on a first come first served basis.

You can make your devices (PS3, laptop, etc) have the same IP address everytime. This is a good idea. I made my main PS3 have IP address 192.168.1.99 (I made it 99 because my router will never automatically assign that particular IP to another device. Remember it only auto assigns starting at 100 and ending at 150) There will never be a conflict with 192.168.1.99 I made my second PS3 have the IP address of 192.168.1.98 for the same reason.

To do this, you will need to manually assign IP addys to your PS3. Do this from the PS3 menu. Make a new connection.

Now, you will enter your ip addy manually. Just make it whatever you want it to be. I would suggest making yours xxx.xxx.x.99

You will also need to enter your subnet mask, primary dns and secondary dns. All this info is found in your router or on a pc that is connected to the router. Once you enter all these fields, you can finish the new connection. It will ask for some other values, but you can leave them default. You only need to manually enter the IP address (which you make up), the subnet mask, primary dns and secondary dns.

It will then test your connection and everything should be fine.

I would also suggest opening some ports on both systems. PSN and COD use certain ports for data and opening them is a very good idea. Here they are:

UDP 3074
UDP 3075
UDP 3478
UDP 3479
UDP 3658
UDP 28960
TCP 28960
TCP 80
TCP 443
TCP 3074
TCP 5223

If you need help with your specific router regarding port forwarding, you can go to http://www.portforward.com/. They have pretty much every router made. Select your router (pay close attention to version numbers) and you will be shown screenshot of your actual router's software along with step by step instructions to port forward your router.

While port forwarding, be sure to only open ports on your PS3's IP address.

Good Luck!

This should be helpful to those PS3 users who have been plagued by connection problems.
