Why Current Gen Consoles Fail - From a Tech Perspective

Post by GoD_GraveDancer on Fri Sep 04, 2009 2:34 pm

If you've ever disassembled your console, like a few of us have, then you'll understand this article a bit better. It explains (from an unbiased stance) why the PS3 and XBOX are plagued with YLOD and RROD in the current gen. Its a good read and it appears the author knows what he's talking about.

That was a great article! Granted, seeing as I have SMT certification and do board-work and assembly for a living, I would be interested. Razz Wish I had some BGA machines myself.....cha-ching!

...and you took my color...but you're bold so it's all good! Very Happy

Good read....although it made me think about how dusty my 360 most likely is on the inside.

I took mine apart twice to fix the bluray lens. The amount of dust in there was astonishing.

I took my 360 apart several times. The first time I did it because it was overheating and I wanted to clean it out. It was so damn dusty in there. I didn't understand it. The fan was the most stubborn part. It was so hard to clean properly. Although, my 360 worked after that without anymore issues so I was happy.

I could do with some basic tech knowledge to be able to take mine apart., without breaking something.

Very good read. I've had 2 360's die on me. The first one I sent in and got fixed for free, but the one they sent me failed about 6 months ago. I decided not to send it in and bought a new Jasper 360. It puts out a lot less heat than my old console and I installed COD4 and WaW on the hard drive to further cut down wear and tear. I was surprised at how much heat the DVD drive manages to add to the mix when it's spinning constantly. I have a feeling heat may have been a factor in the decision to allow people to install the games. The load times aren't that much better. I also noticed that after the NXE update in August, the space taken up by the games dramatically reduced. For instance, WaW used to take up 6.9GB and now it only takes up 6.4GB. So if you installed games pre-update it would be worth your effort to delete and re-install them. wink

I also installed to HD my most played games. Seems to be working well.
