Thermal scope on Derail

Post by dungbeetle on Sat Nov 28, 2009 5:43 pm

Um, I thought one of the best maps to use the thermal scope on would have been Derail, with all that snow.

But when you look through the scope, you can't make out the white (hot) thermal image of the other players against the white (hot?? ) image of the snow!

Wassat all about then?

Can't you invert the view of the thermal from black/white to white/black? That may help a bit. I've honestly not used the thermal scope enough to properly help you.

Perhaps I'll load it up on my TAR tonight.

I don't know, but that would prolly do the trick if you could.

Even so, snow wouldn't show as white through a regular thermal scope, would it?

Yeah, I thought that was a little silly as well. Basically, it's a "turn you bright white if you're not using cold-blooded" scope.

Just loaded up a Private match on Derail with the Thermal Scope and realized I must be thinking about the Chopper Gunner/AC-130 being able to invert black/white.

I see what you're saying now. I guess they should've added the invert option for the Thermal as well.

Considering is uses a FLIR scope which stands for Forward Looking Infrared, I think everyone is pretty spot on in their thinking.

I may be wrong but isnt infered where you see blue and heat is ranged from purple or red to white? on the light spectrum or something like that.

And thermal is simply black and white.

It's just different kinds of digital processing. It's a valid point dungbeetle has about the snow being white. In reality, snow should be black in contrast to anything with warmth. i.e. A person. It's not unreasonable to expect a thermal scope to be easier to use in a cold environment, as the dark background would make seeing anything that gives off heat that much easier for you. I find it disappointing that's not the case in MW2. It would have added to the fun of the thermal scope on Derail and Sub Base. Instead, it's easier to use in the desert. thinker

There's nothing they can do about it, they would not have an invert button on a thermal scope.

See, I was hoping the thermal would be like a real thermal, where cold is blue/black and the heat is measured in greens, reds, oranges, pinks, etc. That would be so much better then white hot only.

Intuitively, you would think the thermal would help in a cold, icy, snowy level.

In my experience, it's most helpful on Wasteland ... where people hide in the grass, shrubs, and edges of the map.

I gotta disagree on this one, guys.

I've had some of my most effective sniping games on Derail with thermal.

But I play it this way:

As a sniper, I find a place in the snow to lay low, so that I'm tough to spot. I then snipe back into the two main buildings, where snipers like to camp, and where there is no snow. They stand out like a sore thumb, while I remain hidden. That's a win.

Someone over on the IW forums has just realised that there's also a problem with the thermal scope and Cold-Blooded on the snow maps:

Cold-Blooded makes the player appear dark against the white snow through the thermal scope, so far from being hidden, they actually show up more clearly than players without it!

D'oh!

Methinks IW need to get their thinking caps on. Very Happy

Camping thermal scopes anoiy me but eh it is what it is. Someone can sit scoped in and never drop it. Makes it harder to tell where they are on the killcam.
